2 Samuel 5:11-25, Luke 14:1-24

Thought from Today’s Old Testament Passage:

“And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.” 2 Samuel v. 24

My brethren, let us learn from David to take no steps without God.… David was not to go to battle until he heard a sound of a rustling in the tops of the mulberry trees. There was a calm, perhaps; and God’s order to David was “you are not to begin to fight until the wind begins rustling though the tops of the mulberry trees”; or as the Rabbis have it, and it is a very pretty conceit if it be true, the footsteps of angels walking along the tops of the mulberry trees make them rustle; that was the sign for them to fight, when God’s cherubim were going with them, when they should come, who can walk through the clouds and fly through the air, led by the great Captain Himself, walking along the mulberry trees, and so make a rustle by their celestial footsteps. How true that may be I cannot tell; my remark is only this—that there are certain signs which ought to be indications to us of certain duties.
