Expecting Good From God [Part 1]

Are you ready for some good news?

God is good all the time; all the time, God is good.

Today’s Text: “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.(Genesis 50:20, ESV)

Life is uncertain, but God is good. There is evil in this world, but God is good. The will of God is good. He can only bring about good because there is nothing bad in His nature.  Thus, when something bad happens, you can look for God to bring good out of it. Always.

Some years ago, a friend and parishioner, Todd, had a most unusual God moment. He was in his front yard when some strangers stopped by his house. The guys had been in the construction industry but work had dried up, so they were offering to do tree work. Todd told the guys that he didn’t have any tree work for them at that time, but that he probably would in the future and that he’d most certainly consider them. Todd said that he was inwardly prompted to share with the men about the love of God.

“Even though I don’t have work for you right now,” Todd assured them, “I am convinced that God is your source. I believe God is going to provide for you.”

Todd was gladdened to discover that the men looking for tree work were Christians. The conversation went far to bolster their faith. Before the men left, Todd asked for their business card and pledged to call them back if a need for tree work emerged. Again, Todd encouraged the men with the assurances of God’s provision and reaffirmed that he felt strongly in his heart that God was saying, “You can trust me, I’m your source.”

What happened next is hilariously miraculous. You can’t make this stuff up. The men drove away and within five minutes (seriously, five minutes!) Todd felt a strange rush of wind. Suddenly, he heard the cracking of timber and Todd stepped around the side of the house to see a large tree crash down. The tree thankfully missed Todd’s house and vehicle, but was blocking his truck in the driveway.

The men looking for work had barely made it out of the neighborhood when Todd called them.

“The Lord has provided,” Todd said with a chuckle.

The men turned around, cut up the tree and removed it as they all praised the Lord.

God is good, all the time; all the time, God is good. And that’s the Gospel!
