Blessing Beyond the Curse part 2

Are you ready for some good news?

The “seed of the woman” has crushed the serpent’s head.

Today’s Text: “So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”” (Genesis 3:14–15, NIV)

I favor the New International Version’s rendering of this text as more consistent with the original meaning and certainly more vivid in its theological underpinnings. In announcing the curses that have entered the world because of humanity’s sin, the indictment against the serpent is far more severe than that against the man or woman. All the ground rules of the spiritual battle are set by God; the serpent has no say-so in the matter. The creature will never be allowed to dictate direction to the Creator. The serpent will crawl on his belly and eat dust. It’s non-negotiable.

Because the “seed of the woman” is forecast to crush the serpent’s head, the tempter spent all of history trying to guess who the ominous “seed” was. Perhaps the “seed of the woman” was Abel, the snake probably conjectured. After all, this was the first son to bring a favorable offering to the Lord. So the serpent crafted a plan of deception unto Cain that lured the older brother into killing the younger. But Abel was not the “seed of the woman”. The seething fear and hatred of the serpent appeared again and again, enticing one son to kill another who seemed favored. Pharaoh killed the Hebrew baby boys. Esau wanted to kill Jacob. Joseph’s brothers wanted to kill their younger sibling. Saul wanted to destroy David. Herod tried to kill the baby Jesus.

But the devil would never be allowed to destroy the Messiah; he only would be permitted to strike at his heel.

The favored Son of God hung on the cross. The serpent struck at His heel. The devil injected the poison of sin and shame into the sinless Messiah. The condemnation for every hideous thought, shameful deed, and wicked crime pierced into the body of Christ – a deadly venom of unimaginable pain. He who knew no sin became sin on the day that the serpent struck at His heel.

But there, on that cross, injected with the sin of the world, the “Seed of the Woman” crushed the head of the serpent. The devil thought he was destroying Jesus but, in fact, Jesus was destroying the works of the devil. Anyone who accepts the saving work of Christ is redeemed from Adam’s curse and set free from the sting of sin and death. In other words, when the serpent struck the heel of Jesus, the “Seed of the Woman” crushed the headship of evil in the life of every believer. And that’s the Gospel!
