A Big Star, a Bigger God [Part 2]

Are you ready for some good news?

Our God is bigger than any mind can comprehend, which means He’s bigger than any problem you’ll ever face.

Today’s Text: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.(Genesis 1:1–3, ESV)

As we’re launching a series on Genesis 1-3, we pause to contemplate the immensity of creation. Consider the stars.

Our own star, the sun is 93 million miles away. It’s a million times the size of the earth. If the earth were a golf ball, the sun would be 15 feet in diameter. If you were to fill the sun with earths, it would be like filling a school bus with golf balls. Our sun is huge.

But, by comparison, our solar system’s star is a small one. Consider the star often called Beetlejuice. It’s 427 light years away and is twice the size of our earth’s orbit around the sun. If the earth were a golf ball, Beetlejuice would be the size of six Empire State Buildings. You could put 262 trillion earths inside Beetlejuice.

But Beetlejuice isn’t the largest star by any means. The biggest star we’ve seen is called Canis Majoris, the Big Dog star! If the earth were a golf ball, Canis Majoris would be the height of Mt. Everest. You could fit 7 quadrillion earths inside Canis Majoris!

Our God created those stars with a word. The word for create in Genesis 1 is the Hebrew word, “bara.” There are other words in the Hebrew language that mean make, fashion or mold. But there is something unique about the word “bara.” It is only used with God as its subject. No one else can “bara”. Only God can create something out of nothing.

If God can create Canis Majoris, what might he be able to create anew in you? He’s a big God. And that’s the Gospel!
