The Tree of Life [Part 2]
Are you ready for some good news?
The Tree of Life is open and free to all in Christ!
Today’s Text: “Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.” (Genesis 3:22–23, ESV)
God stopped in the middle of His sentence. I know of no other place in the Word where God interrupts Himself like that. He couldn’t bear the thought of ending the sentence because if Adam and Eve, in their condition of sin, ate the tree of eternity, it would place them in eternal condemnation. Such a thought was too unbearable for God. So he truncated His own sentence and positioned cherubim east of Eden to guard the tree of life. But the tree never disappeared.
The Tree of Life was there in Psalm 1: Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked… he is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in season and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
That tree was there in Psalm 92:12: The righteous flourish like the palm ….
That tree is there, hidden in Proverbs 3:18: Wisdom is a Tree of ….
It is inProverbs 11:30: The fruit of righteousness is a Tree of Life.
It is tucked away in Isaiah 44:23: …shout, O depths of the earth; break forth into singing, O mountains, O forest, and every tree in it.
It is inIsaiah 65:22:…for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
It is tucked away in Jeremiah’s prophecy, Jeremiah 17:7-8: Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord, He is like a tree planted by water….
It is there in Ezekiel’s vision of the temple, Ezekiel 41:17-19: And on the walls all around, inside and outside, was a measured pattern. It was carved of cherubim and palm trees, a palm tree between cherub and cherub.
The tree was there in the book of the prophet Joel, Joel 2:22: Fear not, you beasts of the field, for the pastures of the wilderness are green; the tree bears its fruit.
It is there inMatthew 3:10: Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down… BUT,
It is there in Matthew 7:17: Every healthy tree bears good fruit… A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit…
InLuke 13:19: Jesus said, The Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree.
And The Tree that stood for all eternity and all time finally shows up in the last book of your Bible with the revelation given to John on the Isle of Patmos:
Revelation 22:14:Blessed are those who wash their robes so that they may have the right to the Tree of Life and that they may enter the city by the gates.
Adam and Eve were banished from the Tree of Life so that their condemnation would not become permanent, but, in Christ, you are invited freely to feast on the tree of God’s grace. And that’s the Gospel!
