Nothing but the Blood [Part 2]
Are you ready for some Good News?
To say “nothing but the blood can save you” is to also say “nothing in addition to the blood is needed to save you.”
Today’s Text: “The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 12:13, ESV)
Imagine yourself a detached spectator on the eve of the final plague against the Egyptians. It seems an ordinary day in the little Egyptian hamlet. Merchants are going about their business and children are playing in the streets. But there is ominous intrigue in the air. There is talk of strange happenings in recent weeks – frogs jumping from the Nile, swarms of locusts swirling, and eclipses of the sun darkening the earth.
As dusk approaches, you hide behind a residential street corner as Egyptian mothers call their children home for dinner and merchants board up their shops. But a strange sight puzzles you. Hebrew fathers creep in front of their slave huts and brush red marks above the door and on the doorposts. What might this strange pigment portend?
At midnight, horrible shrieks emerge from the Egyptian neighborhoods. Firstborns are suddenly dying. A shadow darker than the darkest night encroaches and you hear an Egyptian man plead his case before the Destroyer: “I am a good man. I have done good things with my life.” The shadow keeps approaching. “What then?” the man pleads desperately, “If my good life cannot save me, what can?”
Like a voice of eternal power, rolling down through the ages, an answer thunders forth: “Nothing. Nothing can deliver you. Nothing … but the blood.”
Later, you see that same dark Destroyer approach the feeble Hebrew homes. But, in the blink of an eye, the darkness flees the home and a cool light seems to emanate from within the Hebrew home. Inside one nearby slave hut, you hear a son ask his father, “Father, what did we do to make the darkness spare us? What is so special about us? What do we have that others don’t?”
And you hear the father respond: “Nothing son. We did nothing. We have nothing.” The father points to the front door: “Nothing. Nothing, but the blood.”
To say that nothing but the blood can save you is to also say that nothing in addition to the blood is necessary to save you. The Passover story points to the cross, the true Passover Lamb, and the glory of the Gospel. Nothing can set you free from death. Nothing but the blood. Nothing can set you free from your sin. Nothing but the blood. No personal resolve or righteousness can move God on your behalf. Nothing but the blood of Jesus. So, you can relax and enjoy God. If those Hebrews were safe in their homes under the blood of the lamb, how much more so are you 100 percent safe under the blood of Jesus! There is no more fitting way to conclude our series on God Moments or to launch into a New Year than to point to the cross. The blood of Jesus - -that’s your ultimate God moment. And that’s the Gospel!
