Destroy this Temple [Part 1]
Are you ready for some good news?
The Lord of the Universe wants to meet with you. He has made a way.
Today’s Text: “So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body.” (John 2:18–21, ESV)
How do I meet God? What do I do, how do I prepare myself in order to meet God? What kind of sacrifice do I need to bring? This is the deepest question in the heart of humanity from the dawn of time. The psalmist echoes the inner yearning:
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? - Psalm 42:1-2
Surely it was in the hearts of Adam and Eve, once they had been banished from Eden, seeing over their shoulder the angels brandishing swords of fire to prevent them from re-entering Paradise, where they once had known uninterrupted fellowship with God. Now they knew only distance from God. Their souls had to be crying, “When can we meet with God like we used to meet in the Garden?”
People at all times, in all places, have been asking the question. I don’t think that there is a culture ever that has not tried to figure out when, and where, and what would be the meeting place with God. People have constructed every kind of cultic temple that could be imagined; they have set up shrines and developed cults, all because they are saying, “When can I meet God?”
And a whole spirit of the age, in trying to answer the question, has said in its New Age philosophy, “Just look inside of yourself and you’ll find God. Just look inside and be your own god.”
When can I meet with God?
There is good news. God’s heart is to meet with you. This is the reason our perfect and holy God sent Jesus, our mediator, who took on all our sin and declared us righteous so that we might boldly approach the throne of God. We can meet with Him, anytime, anywhere, with no sacrifice required, because of Jesus. And that’s the gospel!
