Accepting Blessing, Rejecting Curse [Part 2]
Are you ready for some good news?
In Christ, you are only blessed – never cursed.
Today’s Text: “Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, a curse that is causeless does not alight.” (Proverbs 26:2, ESV)
There will always be people who want to bless you (affirm you and speak a positive destiny over your life) and those who want to curse you (malign you and speak a negative destiny over your life). As you develop your sensitivity to the Spirit and embrace the depths of the Gospel, you can easily take in blessing while ignoring and rejecting curse.
Some years ago, NFL superstar quarterback, Peyton Manning, was featured in a delightful commercial that highlighted the athlete’s generally positive outlook on life. In the commercial, Manning’s team (the Broncos) is scheduled to play an away game and Peyton is pictured in his hotel room. Because he’s in “enemy” territory, everyone the quarterback meets is cursing him.
As Manning steps into the elevator, the bellboy scowls and claims: “You’re going down, Manning!”
The quarterback smiles naively and responds, “You’re right. I’m going down to the 4th floor. Going to get a massage today. Nice day. Thank you.”
In the next scene, Peyton is delivered a basket of fruit. The delivery attendant smirks: “Don’t choke on it.”
“Good call there, thanks,” responds the naively positive quarterback. “I think I’ll chop it up and put it in a little fruit salad. Good idea. Thank you.”
Next, as Manning is enjoying the morning air from his hotel balcony, the housekeeper on the adjacent balcony shouts: “Go take a hike!”
The cool quarterback responds, “Good idea. I think I will. Beautiful day. Thank you. I think I’ll take a hike.”
Peyton Manning’s cool demeanor brings a smile to my face but points to a profound possibility for the Christian. Because Christ has taken all the curse and condemnation, we are free to reject every form of curse. You can let any attempts to bind you with fear and shame fall away impotently, finding no place in your heart. In Christ, you’re blessed and never cursed. And that’s the Gospel!
