Wear the Robe Your Father Gives You [Part 1]
Are you ready for some good news?
God has given you a unique anointing; it’s OK to wear the robe your Father has given you.
Today’s Text: “Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors.” (Genesis 37:3, ESV)
Joseph’s father, Jacob, was a foolish dad who fell right into the generational sin pattern of parental favoritism. His put his special love for Joseph on display by giving him a beautiful, ornamental tunic.
Joseph’s brothers hated their younger sibling already. But when they saw Joseph walking around in that robe, they hated him all the more. Some scholars and interpreters assert that Joseph was something of a braggart, flaunting his favored position in the family. I don’t think so. There is never any evidence that Joseph ever rubs his brothers’ noses in it. Throughout the shocking narrative recorded in Genesis 37-50, Joseph has only relenting love for his brothers.
No, I don’t think Joseph wore that coat because he wanted to make his brothers jealous. I think he wore that coat because he wasn’t embarrassed at his father’s affection. It was a symbol of something deeper in Joseph’s life. Whatever good gifts God gave him, Joseph accepted.
Late in the drama, after Joseph had spent years in prison, it’s shocking that Joseph was promoted to prime minister of Egypt. But what may be more shocking is that Joseph gladly accepted the honor without hesitation.
I think it was that same childlike, receptive spirit that made Joseph confidently wear the robe his father had given him.
Your Heavenly Father has given you a robe. There is a unique anointing upon your life. He’s given you a mantle – a special set of gifts and a unique calling. Others may not like it. Others might feel threatened by it. It may not always make you popular – but, if it’s from God, wear it!
Perhaps it would have gone better for Joseph if he’d hidden his father’s gift in the closet. Perhaps. But, I doubt it. People who are jealous of you are going to be jealous of you. People who hate you are going to hate you.
I’d rather not spend my life focused on whether others like the robe my Father has given me. If God gave it to me, it means God likes it – and that’s more than enough reason to wear it. You can happily wear the robe your Father gives you. And that’s the Gospel!
