Amazing Rescue [Part 1]
Are you ready for some good news?
Your life is a miracle. Whether you are aware of it or not, God has rescued you over and over. Without His amazing intervention, you most certainly would have fallen to untold perils.
Today’s Text: “You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.” (Deuteronomy 5:15, ESV)
Look closely at the two sentences in the fifth verse of Deuteronomy 15.
The first sentence is call to remember. Remember your slavery. Remember the last plague against Egypt. Remember the dreadful, dark Destroyer that moved through even Pharaoh’s own palace. Remember the Passover lamb and the blood over your doorposts. Remember the day that Pharaoh and all the evil of Egypt was judged decisively and you were released from centuries of cruel enslavement. REMEMBER what God has done for you! REMBEMBER the most amazing rescue in the history of your people.
The second sentence of Deuteronomy 5:15 is a call to keep the Sabbath. It is an exhortation to rest. It is an invitation to “be” rather than “do.” It is a free ticket to weekly jubilee.
Remember how God rescued you. Keep the Sabbath. Does it seem odd for those two commands to be inseparably attached in the same verse in the middle of the Ten Commandments?
There is a powerful, unbreakable connection between remembering your God moments of Amazing Rescue and being able to rest from the stress and strain of life. Because we face a seemingly endless stream of dangers and toils, we are unrelentingly tempted to spend every waking moment trying to solve problems and accomplish more. Because life seems so uncertain and full of peril, we are unceasingly tempted to worry and strive.
Only when you recognize and rehearse the moments in your life in which God has rescued you from harm, spared you from danger and set you free from entanglement can your soul find confidence that God will do the same for you today.
God has been there throughout your life protecting you, rescuing you and setting you free. After all, He is a Savior. And that’s the Gospel!
