Read: Colossians 3

Key Verse: “Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.” - Colossians 3:21

There are two ends of the spectrum in parenting that can have disastrous results: 1) providing no discipline and 2) excessively harsh discipline. The apostle Paul is giving clear instruction with a warning to parents in this verse. A child can become bitter and discouraged when the parent’s behavior is out of control and demoralizing. Parents have a God-given authority to shape the character of their children, but there is also a responsibility to find the right balance of grace and truth.

Discipline should be a significant but yet minor part of the greater relationship. Fun activities, listening, quality time, spiritual development, creativity, reading, and exercise provide a healthy balance and help meet the child’s needs. Discipline should be clear, calm, and appropriate. God disciplines those He loves, and it is a gift to us in helping us become more like Jesus. Parents have the privilege of setting healthy limits and standards of justice and kindness that help a child grow in positive ways.
