Uplifting Reads for this Time

This has been a hard spring and summer for all of us. Early on in the pandemic, I'd read everything I could about the virus, trying to stay up-to-date on symptoms and health department recommendations. I couldn't stay away from stories about health care heroes and people who'd survived COVID-19. But it was all so draining. So I decided to read things that were uplifting and meaningful. It made such a difference to my outlook that I want to share some of those reads with you.

It is somehow fitting that I wanted to get away from the pandemic but I couldn't get away from people in peril. The two best books I've read lately are: The Splendid and the Vile by Eric Larson, and If I Were You by Lynn Austin.

I love books on WWII and this is one of the best I've ever read. Larson writes a non-fiction account of Winston Churchill's first year in office during WWII. It's riveting, and reads like fiction. Hated to see it end.

Lynn gave me an advance copy of her new book, and though I generally don't read Christian fiction, I found this book to be a page turner. Not only does she write a fascinating story but her research is terrific. So in this book we get interesting insight into what it would have been like to have lived in London during WWII. It was just what I needed to take my mind off the situation we're all in.

I've also heard great things about her biblical fiction series, Chronicles of the Kings. Because of her strong research and writing skills it seems these books would be a terrific way to satisfy a desire for fascinating fiction that will also update your knowledge of the Bible.

I hope you've found some good things to read during this time. I'd like to know what they are! Please comment with a photo and brief description of a book that you'd recommend to readers who are also interested in taking their minds off the 24/7 news cycle.
