Love's Enduring Power

We can ask God to place us as a seal over his heart, a seal that will never be broken because of the intensity of his love, which is as strong as death.

Love's Enduring Power

An image of a red wax seal with the word LOVE embossed in it.

The woman in the Song of Songs knows the enduring power of love. She speaks of a love so deep and strong that it can withstand elemental threats like death and floods. It is strong and “flashes like a fire, the brightest kind of flame.” Her passionate response to the man she loves images what our own response to God can be. Like her, we can ask God to place us as a seal over his heart, a seal that will never be broken because of the intensity of his love, which is as strong as death, its jealousy as enduring as the grave.

Promises in Scripture

Place me like a seal over your heart,
like a seal on your arm.
For love is as strong as death,
its jealousy as enduring as the grave.
Love flashes like fire,
the brightest kind of flame.
Many waters cannot quench love,
nor can rivers drown it.
If a man tried to buy love
with all his wealth,
his offer would be utterly scorned.
Song of Songs 8:6

So now, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will end the captivity of my people; I will have mercy on all Israel, for I jealously guard my holy reputation! Ezekiel 39:25

Then the LORD will pity his people
and jealously guard the honor of his land.
Joel 2:18

Did God's people stumble and fall beyond recovery? Of course not! They were disobedient, so God made salvation available to the Gentiles. But he wanted his own people to become jealous and claim it for themselves. Romans 11:1
