Powerful Prayers of Preparation and Protection for Summer Mission Trips

I remember my first mission trip like it was yesterday! But the story began a long time before. I was around 10 years old when I broke my arm in 2 places, and I was always a bit of a danger mouse. However, this break was the worst as it needed surgical intervention, three surgeries later in fact. Due to the surgeries, I was off from school. I remember watching a morning TV show that revealed to the watcher that there are homes in Romania where little kids have no families. I remember as brazen as ever walking up to my mam who was preparing dinner and announcing, “One day I will be a missionary”. She did what all good parents did, and replied, “Uh huh pet” and carried on prepping as she didn’t think much of it.

Fast forward a whole decade and at 21 years old I got on a plane with my Pastor, and two other folks to take my first trip away from home without any of my family. The destination was South Africa, and we stayed in Phalaborwa with an incredible Pastor named Paul and his wonderful family. I cannot convey to you in words what this trip was for me.

But in all transparency, the following year I went to Mozambique and stayed with an English Elim Missionary, Gregory and his wife, Sharon, who were amazing. This trip was wonderful, but I came home very unwell and this led to a shake in my faith.

Prayers I prayed before I left my home country of Northern Ireland were not even close to what I should have been praying! So today friend I would like to leave you with prayers that I hope would be helpful for your trip.

A Prayer for Safety

Above all else, praying for safety is a priority. Some of the countries our missionaries go to are unsafe for Christians. They are places that Christ is not welcome, and the name of Jesus needs to be whispered rather than shouted.

Dear Jesus,
As I embark on this mission to make your name known, I pray that you would go with me, as Deuteronomy says that you would go before me and you will be with me, never leaving me. Lord, that you would remind me of this truth that I may be brave, unafraid, and not discouraged. But Lord, that I would know your presence and you would grant me safety in Jesus' Name. That I would be protected and hedged in by heaven, and that no harm or danger would come to me and my team.
In Jesus name,
Amen.

A Prayer for Fertile Ground

Praying for the soil that you will soon stand upon is so vital. It is so important to remember that as you go to sow seeds, the Lord does go before, and he will soften the hearts of those you will go to see. They may not become believers then and there, but they might ruminate on scripture for a while, journeying with God, so let’s pray for good soil.

Heavenly Father,
I think now of the nation of ………….. where my feet will soon stand. Lord, I am coming to you to pray for those people, to pray for their nations, their government, their leaders, their hearts. Father God, I ask that you would already be softening hearts to your love and your gospel. That you would prepare hearts to be ready to receive your love and to understand it, despite our human incapability to have context for it. Holy Spirit, would you rest on these people and draw them to God. Jesus, I pray as I am interceding for them, you would intercede on their behalf also, and that many, many would come to know you and decide to follow you, taking up their cross daily.
In Jesus name
Amen.

A Prayer for Your Ministry

Let's now take a minute to pray for the ministry you will be going out to. These ministries are working tirelessly in the background, and some will need an extra outpouring of the presence of God and grace to sustain them.

Father,
I think of …………………… (ministry). I am so thankful that they are welcoming us to come and spend time with them. Lord, make us a blessing and not a burden. Help us to use initiative to help where we see gaps. Lord, I pray you would pour out a blessing upon them and their families, and that they would see the fruit of their labour. That they would know they are in God's perfect timing, and perfect peace would abound in their hearts. Jesus, would you intercede for them? Holy Spirit, would you be in them and around them, always keeping them safe.
In Jesus name
Amen.

A Prayer for Your Traveling Group

Let’s pray for your group that is leaving the comforts of their home for a new space, a new place, new people, and a new language.

Heavenly Father,
I thank you that you are the God of the great commission, the one who tells us to go into all the world and preach the gospel, and that where you command, you also bless. Father God, I pray that we as a team would know your blessing, your presence, and your hand with us, sustaining us. Would you help us in the new place to feel welcomed, help us to understand the language, the culture, the societal norms, and to bring Jesus to the people in a way that they understand? Help us to be like you, Jesus, telling parables for others to grasp heavenly and holy things in easier ways. Holy Spirit, would you help us to be creative in how we teach Jesus, but never ever leave the message of God behind. In the midst of all the change, you are a firm rock on which we can stand, and we leave all that happens in this trip in your hands. Be it our travel arrangements, food choices, accommodation, our suitcases, or our friends and loved ones. Help all of this go to plan, and if something happens out of the ordinary, remind us that you are still in control.  You are still on the throne, and you are still good.
In Jesus' Holy Name
Amen.

A Prayer for Those Staying Home

As you embark on a trip this year, I pray you know the blessing of God with you. I pray that you know what you are doing is holy work, and while we need not go far from home to reach Judea, Samaria, and nations, leaving home to do so is a big commitment, and I trust you will be blessed 7-fold for doing so.

Lastly, let's pray for those we leave behind, as they stay home doing everyday life with a piece of them off expanding the kingdom.

Jesus,
I know you are faithful, and I know you will go with me, but I also ask that you present yourself to my family. That they would know a peace in me going, that they would know you are as much with me as you are with them. I pray that they would sleep well, knowing I am safe with Jesus at my side. I pray that they would know a blessing for sending me out, and I am thankful that I have people who love me enough to worry about me. Lord, I pray that your will be done as they evangelise in our community.
In Jesus name
Amen.

I pray for your trip that you have a safe flight, an easy travel, and that you see the fruits of your labour.
