Why Do We Think of God as Big?

God cannot be measured; however, we can read of His greatness and “bigness” in the Bible. Our Lord is certainly bigger than anything and everything in the world, including the devil, death, evil, or anything else.

Why Do We Think of God as Big?

In the classic VeggieTales song, Bob, Larry, and Junior sing, “God is bigger than the boogieman/He’s bigger than Godzilla, or the monsters on TV/Oh, God is bigger than the boogieman/And he’s watching out for you and me.”

It is not surprising that this VeggieTales song implies the idea that God is big. There are many factors as to how people have thought of God as being big.

Thinking Big Ideas

The idea of God being portrayed as “big” in our minds comes from the Bible. Scripture repeatedly refers to God as being big. In Isaiah 6:1, the prophet tells us, “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple.”

From Isaiah’s description of God, God would have to be big since His robe filled the entire temple. The Bible tells us God created all of the planets, the stars, the galaxies, the heavens, and everything in it (Genesis 1:1-31; Psalm 121:2; John 1:1-3).

In order to create the earth, the heavens, and everything in it, it is not hard to imagine why we have painted out God to be really big in our minds. God is the Creator of everything (Psalm 104:24), which fuels the thought in our minds that God has to be big.

We look at the earth, the planets, the galaxies, and they are all enormously large. It would stand to reason that since the earth, the planets, and the galaxies are all huge, then as the Creator of these amazing things, God would have to be big too.

Is God Really Big?

God is spirit (John 4:24). This means that God does not have a physical body as we do. We cannot know for certain exactly how big God actually is since He is spirit. As human beings, we often like to know how “big” something is, such as a house, a car, or the love a person has for us, but God is not measurable.

God is God, which means we cannot fully know everything about Him, such as His exact size. The Bible does tell us that God is bigger, stronger, and more powerful than our problems, evil, or death.

I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting people may know there is none besides me. I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things (Isaiah 45:5-7).

Nothing is impossible for our mighty God (Matthew 19:26). It can be common for us to view God as “big” because it gives us a sense of comfort to know that God is bigger than the things of this world.

Nothing in the entire universe is stronger or more powerful than God. No matter how “great” or “famous” a person is, each person will have to stand before God and give an account of themself to God (Romans 14:12).

God is also shown to be big in the Book of Psalms. In Psalm 139, David sings that he cannot go anywhere without God knowing where He is located (1-24). Whether David goes to the highest mountain or the lowest pit, God is still with him. Just as God was with David, He goes with each of us. No amount of feet, miles, or distance can separate us from God (Romans 8:31-39).

This is because God’s love for us is that big. The love God has for us stretches throughout time and presently engulfs all people. God showed His great love for us by sending His Son to die for our sins.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him (John 3:16-17).

There is no greater love for God to die for us in order to bring us into a restored relationship with Him again. Ever since the fall of man, all people are separated from God because of our sins (Romans 6:23). Only by Jesus coming in the form of a man, dying for our sins, and being resurrected could save us from our sins (Ephesians 2:8-9).

God loves us that much. We can often forget or become calloused to the truth of God’s love; however, today can be the day that you revive your love for God. God’s love for you will never change as He knows all of your flaws and quirks, but He loves you anyway. His big love for us is unconditional, which means His love will never weaken for His children.

Each day when you wake up, you can remind yourself of the copious love God has for you by reflecting on the truth of the Bible. When you turn to God in prayer, you will be overcome by the greatness of His presence. To be able to be in the presence of our wonderful Creator is a true honor, privilege, and blessing.

Living in the Light of God

To know that God is bigger, stronger, and more powerful than anything else in our lives can give us great comfort and confidence. While we cannot measure God in the form of size, we can know that God is greater than any trouble we will come across in our lives. God tells us not to fear because He is always with us.

Isaiah 41:10 says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” God is greater than disease, pain, grief, evil, or death.

Jesus has already conquered the grave, which means if you place faith in Him, you will conquer the grave too. God wants you to live in the light of trusting Him. We can have full confidence in God because He is greater than the things of the world.

1 John 4:4 tells us, “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” As believers, we have the Holy Spirit in us — God’s Spirit lives inside of all believers and He is greater than the devil, demons, or any trouble of this world.

Live in the truth of resting in God’s greatness. God cannot be measured; however, we can read of His greatness and “bigness” in the Bible. Our Lord is certainly bigger than anything and everything in the world, including the devil, death, evil, or anything else.
