12 Bible Verses to Strengthen Your Faith in Uncertain Times

If you’re anything like me, the world feels a little crazy right now. The world often can feel like nothing makes sense, and we may even wonder where God is. We can open social media, listen to the radio, or turn on the news and hear about some pretty hard things happening in the world around us.  We can experience painful and uncertain events close to us within our friends and family, and hear of uncertainty far away from us in other countries. Even Jesus said, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.” Matthew 24:6-7

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:1-2)

Let’s not set our focus on the hard things in this life, because Jesus told us in the previous verse, “See to it that you are not alarmed.”  But first, what is faith? “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1

We must strengthen our faith so that when we experience the things in life that knock us off balance, we can anchor ourselves to our steady place and firm foundation. And how do we strengthen faith?  

Let’s explore the following 12 verses that we can submit to memory, or post around the house on sticky notes, and when the uncertainties and hardness of life come crashing in on us, we can recall God’s promises, invite him into what we are experiencing and steady ourselves in the storm.

1. Isaiah 41:10

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." - Isaiah 41:10

Life is hard and hurts sometimes. We are not promised life will be easy. Our circumstances and the things we will endure may be quite different from one another, but the feelings we experience through them are human emotions that we all feel. In this verse the word dismayed means to be filled with fear, anxiety or discouragement, especially due to something unexpected or challenging. 

Often, hard things hit us out of the blue, break our hearts, cause unimaginable pain and suffering, and completely knock us off balance. When fear and doubt threaten to steal our peace, it’s so important to remember that we are never alone. God is always with us, walking through the hard things in life right beside us. 

Let us turn to Him in our times of hurting, in our times of suffering, in our times of uncertainty, and let’s receive His help. We can choose in these moments to allow His strength to pour into every part of our heart and soul. God promises to hold us up with His “righteous right hand”. That’s a pretty powerful reminder that He is always with us and wants us to rely on Him. To be our strength when life hurts and we are unsteady. I think we should let him.

2. Psalm 46:1-2

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea." - Psalm 46:1-2

Sometimes life feels like the whole earth is giving way and the mountains are crumbling and crashing down around us. In an instant, our whole world can change. The pain is real. The fear is real. The feelings are real. We know that we will face trouble in this broken and painful world. We know hardships will come, but we also know that doesn’t make going through them any easier. 

So, what does help us during these seasons of pain and suffering? Let us remember that God is our refuge and strength. He is where our help comes from. When we try to do it all on our own, we will become exhausted and overrun. We won’t have the endurance to make it through.  

God is the source of our power and strength, and it is His power that will empower us to face the challenges and hardships that come our way. God wants us to come to Him in the midst of our troubles. To climb into the shelter of His safety, His love, and His peace. It is there under the wings of His safety that we can release our fear and receive the rest we need to endure the journey we face. When we are near Him, we can endure all that comes our way.

3. Romans 8:28

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." - Romans 8:28

I hold onto this verse so very tightly. I try to remember - If it’s not good, it’s not done yet. It is my prayer that we remember that God is a loving Father in all things. The good, the bad, and the wobbly. What a beautiful reminder that God loves us so much that He is active in every area of our lives. No matter what we are going through, He is right there with us through it all. 

Throughout the scriptures, we are reminded over and over that life won’t be easy, and we will endure hard things. If we are not in a hard season now, we have been in the past, and we are sure to have more in the future. And also, throughout scripture, God gives us the but... But here is that we will go through, endure, and suffer hard things, but we know... That’s our faith - the know. We know that God will work it all out for our good. We can have confidence in this because we can see it all around us, even in the hard times. God doesn’t just use the good things for His good; He uses all things for His good. 

When we are in moments and seasons that feel extra hard, it is important that we stay close to God and maintain our close relationship with Him. And we can rest easily knowing that our Father in Heaven loves us, always. And because we love Him, He will work it all out for good.

Praying

4. Proverbs 3:5-6

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." - Proverbs 3:5-6

Let us rest in the knowledge that God knows our past, our present, and our future.  And because he knows it all, His direction, His path, His promises are way better than we could ever imagine or do for ourselves. This verse reminds us that if we rely on and trust God’s guidance and direction in our lives, He will direct our path and lead us in the right direction, right where He is directing us to go. 

We don’t have a full understanding of all the things going on in our lives and around us. We don’t know what will come in the future. What hardships we will endure. What joy we will be blessed to experience. What we see around us in these moments is such a tiny part of a much bigger picture. 

It is my prayer that if you’re in a hard and challenging season that you come to the Father, pray earnestly and in full surrender, asking for God’s guidance and direction. And have faith that He will lead you in the right direction. Let’s submit to the one who knows. Let us put our confidence and trust in Him. Let us remember how much He loves us and wants what’s best for us, and rely on Him with all our heart.

5. 2 Corinthians 5:7

"For we live by faith, not by sight." - 2 Corinthians 5:7

In this verse, the apostle Paul pleads with us to live our lives by faith rather than what we can physically see or understand around us. In this verse, the word faith means – living according to God’s promises and guidance, even when they are not immediately visible or understandable, rather than relying solely on physical senses or personal understanding. 

It’s so important to know who God is. It’s important to be in His word so that we know His character. It’s important to be in a close relationship with Him through prayer and meditation. When we know who He is, we can know that He is a good and loving Father who wants what’s best for us. We can trust that God is working behind the scenes for our benefit and eternal blessings. He is always working to make things good. He knows all of the things going on in our lives and in the world that we could never comprehend. 

God wants us to trust Him with everything in our lives. He is always present and active, even though we can’t see Him. Let us have faith in Him and His love for us, having faith that He’s making a way when we may not see a way. Having this kind of faith involves active obedience to God’s will and trusting that He knows you, loves you, and wants what’s best for you. He is always acting in your best interest.

6. Psalm 34:17-18

"The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:17-18

This verse doesn’t imply that we will never have to endure troubles in this life. It doesn’t say that we will never be broken-hearted or not have to endure suffering of all kinds. This verse is a promise that God knows what we are going through and hears our pleading cries to Him. Our every hurt, our every frustration, our every stress-filled deep breath. He hears you. He is close to your distress and brokenness. 

God is inviting you to come to Him with all that you’re carrying. He is near. If you’re feeling like God feels far away, I would like to encourage you to go to Him in prayer. I’ve learned that it’s not Him that’s distant. It’s we who create that distance. Come to Him. God is capable and ready to hold you in your difficult and pain-filled moments. Come to Him and let him mend your broken heart. Let Him fill you with the peace that only He can offer. 

It’s important to remember that when the weight of life feels heavy beyond measure, God wants us to come to Him and be close to Him. Let us come to him, seek the rest that only He can give, and find the peace that our hearts and souls need, in His presence.

7. Jeremiah 29:11

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." - Jeremiah 29:11

Celebrate this today, friend! The God who created you knows every detail of who you are- your life, your joy, your hurts, your sorrows, and your every tear. He knows what you’ve been through, what you’re going through, and what lies ahead. He knows your desires, your heart, and every detail of what makes you, you. And guess what?! He has amazing plans set aside just for you. 

God gave this message to the Israelites in exile, assuring them of a prosperous future and hope despite the difficult circumstances they were currently facing. Let this be your assurance that God knows what you’re going through, and He is giving you the same message of hope!

In this verse, the word prosper means to flourish, thrive, and experience success in your life, particularly in the sense of well-being and abundance. Some say the word prosper means finding peace and contentment in the midst of life’s challenges. This verse doesn’t promise a life without enduring hard things, but rather gives us reassurance that God will provide for us and that we will have His peace with us. 

Let us rest in this amazing promise God gives – to prosper you – to give you hope and a future! And not just any future. A future that is prosperous - flourish, thrive, experience success, well-being, abundance, and peace. That sounds like a promise we can stand on today.

8. James 1:2-4

8. James 1:2-4

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." - James 1:2-4

If you’re anything like me, you don’t particularly find joy in trials or consider them pure joy. They hurt. They’re hard. It’s most definitely not fun to go through trials. Trials are often met with tears, frustration, disappointment, and even anger. 

Yes, we will face trials of many kinds. Even if we somehow skimmed over the verses in our Bible study that remind us of this very message, we know this to be true because we’ve endured many in our lives. And I can assure you, this is not my favorite promise from God. But he always has a but… And we have a pretty big one in this verse. But here is this - But in the testing, we receive many gifts. We learn how to be strong. We will learn how to persevere. We will learn to finish the work we are called to do. Yes, facing trials is a work we are called to do. 

Through trials, we learn a lot of lessons like patience, compassion, and love. And they most definitely help us become more like Jesus. And in our learning, we are growing and becoming who our faithful Father in Heaven is leading us to become. We are a work in progress. Keep moving forward!

9. Matthew 6:34

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." - Matthew 6:34

This is a simple verse, but it may not feel so simple to execute. I am grateful for easy days. Days when I can make it through the day without much trouble. When traffic lights are green and cars move at a steady pace. When I know what I want to eat, work goes smoothly. My coffee is perfect, and everyone in the house is healthy and happy and at peace. But not every day is like that. Often, each day has a little trouble of its own. 

We can look at this verse at face value and know that this is a reminder to not worry about the future because worrying doesn’t do us any good. It doesn’t change the outcome and just adds a lot of stress to us in the present. Have you heard that phrase about most of the things we worry about never coming about? In this verse, we are reminded that we shouldn’t let the anxiety or stress of the future consume us. 

I believe this is a reminder to rest in the presence of the blessings that God is blessing us with today. Right now. We are not supposed to worry about what tomorrow may bring. Let us remember to enjoy and find gratitude in today. What blessings, big and small, can you focus on today that will help you stay present in this moment?

10. Lamentations 3:23

"Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." -Lamentations 3:22-23

Because the Lord loves us so much, we are given a new, beautiful day every single morning! Hallelujah! I am so grateful that God is so faithful in this blessing. Every single day, we get a new beautiful and glorious sunrise, and every day the darkness comes to an end. Every day, God's compassion is renewed, and in this, He reminds us of His Faithfulness. His love for us. 

We will face hardship and heartbreak in this life. We may feel like our whole world has been completely devastated and broken apart. But this verse reminds us that we will not be consumed by all that we endure. It reminds us that our God is a faithful Father, and His mercy and grace will sustain us through all that we will ever go through. God is our shield, and we can hold onto Him and His promises for protection and strength every day. 

God’s goodness never runs out. He is our reliable, and our constant, in the midst of all that isn’t. His love will never end. His love has no conditions. His promises are new every morning. 

Let us remember that even the darkness that we endure in our lives, that suffering, never lasts forever. God loves us and He blesses us with a fresh start each and every day, without fail.

11. Philippians 4:6-7

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:6-7

I know in our busy, rushed, and crazy life, it may seem hard to be obedient to this passage and not be anxious about anything. To not be consumed by our fears and our worries. And there seems to be an abundance of things to worry about. But what if, when we start to feel anxious about something in our day, we come to God and praise Him for what is right? 

What if we share with Him how we’re feeling, and what’s going on that’s rocking our world, and just sit with Him. Being in stillness and allowing God to move within us and care for us, and be our provision.  Allow God’s peace to fill our hearts and minds. Expressing gratitude for all He’s done that is right in our lives. Even if we have to start with the simple to get our gratitude juices flowing. Like, I am grateful for my yummy cup of coffee that started my day. And my warm, comfy bed that I was in before I woke up. 

Let’s try to remember to come to the Father first, instead of last, so that we can feel His love, strength, and peace as soon as possible. Let’s come to Him, praising Him for what is right, and let His peace be the protection over our hearts and minds.

12. Joshua 1:9

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” - Joshua 1:9

God is with us always. No matter where we are, He’s there. He is with us in our car, at work, and He’s with us when we are grocery shopping. And He’s with us in our sleepless nights, lying in our bed, worrying and discouraged by the weight of the things we didn’t give to God before we went to bed. He’s with us when we’re celebrating all that is right, and when we’re crying and distraught from overwhelm, pain, loss, and suffering. 

This verse comes from a passage where God was speaking to Joshua. And I believe His feelings haven’t changed. God commanded that we be strong and courageous and not be afraid or discouraged. This is a command. Not a suggestion. He promises that He is with us always, wherever we go. It is the knowing of this presence, God’s presence, that will give us our courage and strength

God wants us to invite Him into our lives. Into every moment we have so that we can be strong and courageous. The world gives us fear and discouragement. Let’s choose not to live as the world would have us live. Let us stay close to the one who gives us our strength and our courage, and allow God's presence and protection to help us endure and overcome our challenges. 

As you let these verses sink into the depths of your heart and soul, remember, having faith doesn’t remove or prevent the storms of life.  Faith anchors you in the middle of all of it. It is my prayer that God’s promises are louder than your fear. I pray He is the one you run to when life feels unsteady. 

Strengthening our faith isn’t about having all of the answers; it’s about trusting and coming to the one who does. Keep moving forward. Keep coming to the Father and spend time with Him regularly. Let Him steady you in His promises. He is always faithful!
