The Answers We're Looking For

I make my living as a videographer. I film interviews of pastors/professors/authors answering questions about the Bible. Then I edit this video footage into individual videos and thousands of people click on them online because they are looking for answers.

Occasionally, I guess because I have this blog or maybe because I attend Bible college, people have questions for me about what the Bible says about ____. I have to admit, that’s one of the most intimidating things in the world. Maybe it’s because I’m more comfortable communicating things in writing because I can plan what I say. Maybe it’s because I feel unworthy to be a person who can confidently say, “Yes. I am 100% certain that ________ is what the Bible says about ________.”

Sometimes, I have these same questions. It is so easy to type your question into a Google search and see what people have to say about these things. Many times, they have a really helpful perspective and there is something that can be learned from what they have to say. On the other hand, sometimes that perspective can be biased or just flat out wrong. And, to be perfectly honest, any of us could be guilty of bias or wrongness.

This is why it is SO important for us to read our Bible regularly. Not only are we doing what verses like2 Timothy 2:15 tells us to do, but we are taking an initiative to learn about our Creator. And I really do believe that something out of this world takes place in our lives when we do that.

There is simply no substitute for reading the Bible ourselves. It’s how God speaks to us directly. It’s how communication takes place between us and God.

Got questions? Want solid answers? I know I do. I sure have been slacking on my Bible reading lately. Maybe some of you have too. Books like Proverbs make it easy for us to develop this habit of learning who God is; obtaining the answers to life’s common problems… developing a hope and a trust in God (and a confidence in ourselves, even) that will keep us on the right track like we so desperately want to be.

Care to join me on a little journey? On Tuesday, January 1st, I'll begin a 31 day journey through the Book of Proverbs. Each day, I'll post a little bit about how each book has inspired me. I encourage you to take a few minutes each day to do the same. It's probably the easiest "Bible Study" we will ever do! Seriously, it’s like 10 minutes out of our day. We can do this…and we’ll be so glad we did.
