Wondering and knowing (Luke 24 v 1-12)

Some terrified women
Read Luke 24:1

• What do the women do (v 1)?

Spices were used to stop corpses smelling; the women know this tomb is a place of the dead.

• What strange facts confront them (v 2-3)?
• How do they react (beginning of v 4)?

Then the women are confronted by two angels. Unsurprisingly they’re scared stiff. But these heavenly men have come to
speak to them…

Read Luke 24:5

• What mistake are the women making in expecting to find Jesus in a tomb (v 5)?
• Why is He “not here” (v 6)?
• How should they have known what would actually happen (v 6-7)?
• What makes the women realise that Jesus really has risen (v 8)?

A wondering man
Read Luke 24:9

• How do the women react to their discovery and the angels’ explanation?
• How do their hearers respond (v 11)? Does this surprise you?

Peter reacts differently, and goes to look for himself (v 12).

• What strange fact confronts him?
• How does he react?

At the end of this passage, Peter is still wondering what's happened, but the women have moved through wondering to knowing.

• What has made the difference between the women and Peter (look back to v 5-8)?

There is no need to wonder why the tomb was empty; it was explained by Jesus before He died, and explained by angels after He rose. We can know!
• If you sometimes find yourself wondering about the truth of the resurrection, what do you need to remind yourself of?
• Which promises of Jesus do you tend to forget will definitely happen? How will remembering change your outlook?

Let’s finish this Easter Day with heaven’s wonderful words:
He is not here. He has risen!
