EASTER: What lies ahead (Luke 22 v 14-38)

It was just a weekend. Yet what happened over the course of it changed history and eternity.

Glory ahead…
ReadLuke 22:14

• When will Jesus next celebrate such a meal (v 16)?
• When will He next drink wine (v 17-18)?
• What does Jesus promise His followers (v 29-30)?

…through suffering
• What must come in between this meal and Jesus’ next (see end of v 15)?

Jesus uses the bread and wine to detail what He means (v 19-20). His body will be broken; His blood will be poured out.

• What lifestyle lies ahead for Jesus’ followers, before they sit in His kingdom (v 26-28)?
• Whose example will they be following (v 27)?
• Why will this be a challenge (v 24-25)?

.............................................
APPLY
• How should your view of your life now be changed by the future glory promised to Jesus’ followers?
• Think of one specific way you can apply v 26-27 to your conduct today.
.............................................

…beyond failure
Read Luke 22:31

• What does Peter think he’s willing to do for Jesus (v 33)?
• What does Jesus know he’ll do to Him? (v 34)?
• But what does Jesus know lies beyond Peter’s failure (v 32)?

Jesus knew the glory that lay ahead of Him in the kingdom of God—but He looked towards it through the suffering that would come first. All too often, His followers fail to follow Him in serving and suffering for Him; but because of His suffering for us, there is still glory ahead.

.............................................
TIME OUT
In v 37, Jesus refers His followers back to an Old Testament prophecy to tell them what “must be fulfilled in me”.
Turn toIsaiah 51:13Isaiah 51:13.
• What do these verses add to our picture of the suffering Jesus will go through before He reaches His glory?
.............................................
.............................................
PRAY
Thank Jesus that He experienced the suffering of the cross to bring you to His glory.
Admit where you are failing Him.
Ask Jesus to show you how and where you might serve and suffer for Him today.
