When You’re Waiting for a Change
by Keri Eichberger
TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
"He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted. When he passes me, I cannot see him; when he goes by, I cannot perceive him." -Job 9:10-11
SOMETHING TO PONDER
Life can change so fast that it appears almost unrecognizable in an instant. But at other times, it’s as if the landscape is stuck in a still frame or you're caught in a Groundhog Day loop staring at monotonous rhythms. Repetitions that, quite honestly, you’re ready to move on from and out of. And that’s the setup surrounding me right now. I can barely see subtle changes, for which I ought to be praising God for the semi-steady. But sometimes the same old story day in and out can be extremely trying, especially as my current elongated circumstances feel a bit harder than I can handle. So here I sit, at a near snapping point. Feeling smothered by the monotony and dying for a breath of breakthrough freedom.
Are you longing for some sort of change? Stuck in the waiting for a season to pass or a difficult experience to smooth over? Even if you can’t pinpoint a specific desire for change right now, I bet you can quickly identify a time when you felt stuck in a limiting financial situation, walked with someone through a long health battle, endured a purposeless job longer than you wanted, pray for a family member’s redemption year after year, or dealt with your own seeming unending physical or mental well-being struggle. And let’s call it like it is: the wait for resolution and reformation can be grueling. Not only am I feeling this now, but I’ve been there repeatedly. We all have.
And the thing is, we’ll be there again. But there is a comforting truth I want to draw attention to for both of us as we consider the presumed stillness in our lives. God is working. And I’m sure you’ve heard this many times before, but I want to share some words from the Bible that bring that truth to radiant life. The book of Job says He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted. And then mentions how he passes us, yet we don’t see or perceive him.
Yes, we don’t always see, but God is not only working while we wait, he’s working wonders! He has miracles in motion that cannot be counted. If we could just soak in the beauty and majesty of these words, and understand that while we’re trudging along a hamster wheel or feeling the blahs and blues of our days, God is working on a masterpiece. A perfect creation that, for a little while, may be hidden, but will be revealed in its perfect time. This means we can rest in the still and slow. Settle into God’s sovereign love and goodness. And let the light of hope fill us up with expectant anticipation of the beauty and blessings that are coming from our faithful God.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Precious Father, You are the author of creation. And though my days feel mundane at times and I can’t always perceive progress, I know you have something mighty in the works. Oh how I long to wait patiently in hope for your goodness. To wait joyfully for the redemption of all things. Lord, help me to rest in the truth of your sovereign power and strength, your faithfulness, and your marvelous miracles and wonders in the works. In Your Steadfast Name, Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
1. What are you waiting for to change?
2. Do you perceive God’s presence and power while you wait?
3. Spend a moment to thank God for the miracles he is working in and through this very season of your life.
