TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock in whom I take refuge.” - Psalm 18:2

SOMETHING TO PONDER

We’ve purchased a few homes over the years, but one memory stands out. When we moved to a new area, we found a neighborhood we immediately loved. As we drove through, everything looked perfect—manicured yards, fresh paint, and homes that seemed flawless from the outside. It felt like a place to settle into without hesitation. Eager, we toured homes right away. But inside, reality was different. The floors were uneven, doors wouldn’t close, and cracks lined the walls. We quickly realized the foundation was compromised. That experience taught us: no matter how beautiful something looks, a weak foundation will be revealed.

The same principle applies to our lives. We can appear polished on the outside, say the right things, and surround ourselves with the right people. It may look like everything’s steady—our homes strong, relationships healthy, lives secure. But beneath the surface, things can look very different. Our children may struggle in ways we can’t fix or that people don’t see. Our marriage might quietly unravel. We may feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or isolated, carrying unseen burdens. Over time, hidden struggles show. The “cracks” appear as stress or distance. “Uneven floors” feel like instability in our thoughts or reactions. “Doors that won’t close” appear as conflicts that have gone unresolved.

But this is where hope comes in. When our foundation is Christ, everything changes. Not because life becomes easy or storms stop, but because we no longer stand on what shifts. Christ is our firm foundation. Psalm 18:2 reminds us, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” When rooted in Him, we have truth to steady us, peace that isn't linked to circumstance, strength for exhaustion, and an identity untouched by fear or failure.

A foundation built on Jesus is evident in our daily lives. It means turning to God before reacting in frustration, grounding our parenting in grace rather than control, choosing forgiveness in marriage rather than withdrawing, and finding stillness with Him no matter the chaos around us. When storms and pressures come, and they will, we no longer scurry around to hold everything together by ourselves. He becomes our rock.

Storms don’t destroy a house with a firm foundation; they reveal its strength. When challenges come, we don’t collapse; we stand. We don’t panic; we anchor. We don’t lose hope, we remember who holds us, and we display spiritual strength. Most importantly, we don’t strengthen our foundation in a storm. We must build it daily in preparation for the storms that will inevitably come. Each time we open God’s word, each time we pray and apply what He shows us. Each time we invite God into decisions, we create a stronger foundation.

When life feels uncertain, remember your foundation. Build deeper on Christ, not just what people see. A life built and grounded in Him is tested but not shaken.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Jesus,
You are my rock, my fortress, my deliverer; in you I put my trust. May my life reflect a firm foundation based on your word. When storms come, I’m thankful that you will be my strength and high tower.  You will meet me in my mess, and I will not be destroyed.  Thank you for my hope is in you, and that you hold my life in the palm of your hands. In Jesus name,
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

  1. Am I focused on what people can see or what’s happening on the inside?
  2. Have I adopted daily disciplines in my life to build a strong foundation in Christ?
  3. Am I trusting Jesus in the storms or circumstances I’m currently facing? What would it take to anchor myself in Christ?
