Faithfulness for the Everyday Task
TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom”—Ecclesiastes 9:10
SOMETHING TO PONDER
Today is the time to be faithful in our work, the daily, everyday tasks we do day in and day out. In accomplishing our ordinary work, each day is where we cultivate faithfulness, not just in our tasks, but in our lives overall, a faithfulness that spills over into everything we do in life.
Although many of our responsibilities and chores may lack excitement and adventure, we can still choose to put our all into them, with all our might, as scripture encourages.
There is a scene in an episode of the classic, hit television series “Mary Tyler Moore,” where Mary is bored with her life. Although she has a television newsroom dream job many would love to have, when asked why she’s bored while sitting on her couch, slumped over, in a slow monotone, she describes going through her day, step by step, expressing the dullness of the same routine over and over again.
In response, her co-worker, news anchor Ted Baxter, stands up with a burst of energy, repeating the routine Mary just described, but with enthusiasm, joy, and excitement in his voice and expressions, spinning the drab feeling of each day from humdrum doldrums to delightful satisfaction.
His take on her repetitive daily life shows how it really does matter how we approach each day, of how we choose to see and tackle our daily routine and tasks, revealing that it’s up to us to decide our attitudes and approach to how we live and work each day.
As Christians, our daily tasks take on an even higher calling because we can offer the work of our hands to God as an offering to honor and glorify Him, giving it a value and worth it doesn’t have in itself. Our faithfulness in carrying out the everyday, ordinary work each day honors and glorifies God, giving it a rich, eternal meaning and purpose beyond merely accomplishing a daily task.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Dear Father, help me to faithfully carry out my everyday ordinary tasks as an offering to You. Help me to accomplish them with all my might, doing them unto You, to honor and bring glory to Your name. Strengthen me to see past the everydayness and routine of them, to look ahead at how they are fulfilling Your purposes and plans here on earth and in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
1. Write down your everyday tasks and consider whether you’re being faithful. If lacking in this area, write down ways you can grow in your faithfulness.
2. In looking at your heart, are you accomplishing your everyday tasks with all your might? If not, consider what is holding you back from giving them your all.
3. Do you believe we can honor God by giving our all, as an offering to Him, in how we fulfill the ordinary work in front of us? If not, what do you believe is holding you back from believing it matters to Him?
