A Prayer for Hope When You Are Worried and Weary
By Tiffany Thibault

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God. - Psalm 42:11

Another day unfolds before me, the business of life swooping in. Before I know it, the day is going full speed ahead. With its busy moments, the to-do lists, the deadlines, I keep plodding forward, girding my strength with yet another cup of coffee. A quick peek at the news or social media brings a burden to my heart. There is so much pain and heartache in this world. A phone call from a friend struggling, a chat with a teen that didn’t go as planned, a misunderstanding with your spouse. All these things begin to pile up one on top of another. This is all in just one day. If you have several days of struggles such as these, as many of us do, and then add to it a new boss, or a loved one suffering in sickness, or financial stress it just becomes too much.

Our brains and heart can only handle so much stress and heartache. Soon you become weary, and discouragement fills your heart. You begin to feel depressed, hopeless. It can feel as though you will never get out from under the weight of these struggles.

Then suddenly you have this thought: “Why am I downcast? Why am I disturbed? Put your hope in God!” The one who penned these words so many years ago was also overwhelmed by his life. He was so focused on getting through his day that he forgot who his God was.

We too are so quick to forget that we know and serve a powerful Lord. In Him we have hope! He is our Savior! He is our God! As we keep stating this truth over and over, those feelings of discouragement and weariness will subside as God fills us with hope that He will be with us through all of our situations.

He is good. He is our Savior. He is our God. As we keep seeking Him, we will yet praise Him. He will get us through today, and He will most certainly be with us in our tomorrows. He will get us through all our stuff. All we need to do is put all our hope in Him. Will you join me in learning to trust Him a little more each moment as we learn how to place our every fear and worry into His very capable hands?

Dear Lord,

Things are happening all around me, things are evil, things are sad, some things of which I cannot control. The weight of the worry, the fear, the struggles I daily encounter are wearing me down, Lord. I get so overwhelmed by all the stuff that I hear about, that I see, that I am experiencing. I am downcast, I am disturbed. Then I remember that you, Lord, are with me. You are here, you are powerful, you are in control. Thank you Lord - you are my hope! Though the world may be falling apart all around me, I will yet praise you! You are my Savior! You are my God!

Thank you, Lord, that I can always turn to you and find peace. Be my hope and peace today I pray. Amen.
