A Prayer for God to Strengthen Mothers Who Feel Worn Out

Bible Reading:

Have you ever felt worn out as a mother? If so, you’re not alone.
That’s the reality of motherhood. As mothers, we keep doing and going even when we feel worn out, because it’s what many of us do: tirelessly and selflessly taking care of everyone around us, often at the cost of neglecting ourselves.
It’s not just physical exhaustion. Often, it’s an emotional and spiritual weariness that takes a toll on us, too. A mother’s life is full of showing up, listening, encouraging, supporting, and continually praying for her family.
Many moms think their tireless efforts will ease once their children grow up, but often, the demands only change and sometimes even intensify. As children go to college, begin careers, get married, and start families of their own, new challenges and responsibilities arise.
God knew beforehand what He was asking of women: to become mothers of all the living, following in Eve’s footsteps. We carry, bear, and nurture new and growing lives for much of our own lives. He entrusts us with His most precious creation: life made in His image.
As 1 Timothy 2:15 reminds us, “But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.”
Mothers Carry the Image of God in Their Wombs
At times, we may forget that we carry the very image of God in our wombs. Jesus never lost sight of His connection to the Father. In John 12:45, He said, “The one who looks at Me is seeing the One who sent Me.”
Again, in John 14:9, we read, “Jesus answered: ‘Don’t you know Me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father?’”
Although our children are not God as Jesus is, His words help shape how we see them. They are representatives of God on earth—not perfect or sinless, but created in His image.
Both our children and ourselves bear God’s image and carry the responsibility of letting that image shine through us.
Motherhood Takes Time
Motherhood is a tremendous responsibility, which is why we need God’s wisdom and the guidance of the Holy Spirit to fulfill it.
From carrying our babies in our wombs, to giving birth, to teaching them life skills from infancy through adulthood and beyond, it is a lifelong calling. It is also why many modern women choose a different path.
Some women, desiring a different lifestyle, feel that motherhood asks too much of them, requiring their time, energy, and very lives to raise children. They are not wrong in recognizing how deeply it changes a person’s life. Motherhood is tiring, time-consuming, and requires selflessness, personal sacrifice, and much more.
Mothers Experience Heartaches, Too
Even though motherhood can be exhausting, the blessings, benefits, and rewards often outweigh what we give.
Still, many mothers experience deep heartache as they face difficult, disappointing, and challenging moments while raising their children.
In those troubling times, we can draw near to God and find comfort in His arms. Our heavenly Father is compassionate and understands sorrow, grief, anguish, and even regret when it comes to loving and caring deeply.
As Genesis 6:6 says, “The Lord regretted that He had made human beings on the earth, and His heart was deeply troubled.”
Let’s Pray:
Dear Father,
Our hearts are full and overflowing with gratitude for the gift of motherhood. Thank You for entrusting us as women with the lives You create and breathe into our wombs. Each time we look into the faces of our children, remind us, O Lord, that they are created in Your image. Strengthen us to daily impress upon their hearts that they represent You on earth. Let Your love flow freely through us so that it reaches our children, showing them how deeply they are loved by You and by us. Strengthen us today and relieve the weariness we sometimes feel after years of caring for our families. As You care for us, help us to lovingly care for the precious lives You have given us.
In troubling times, Lord, draw near and comfort us in Your steadfast and loving arms. Refresh, renew, and restore us so that we can continue to faithfully love and serve our families. Fill us with Your wisdom so that we may lead our children to love You and receive salvation and eternal life through Your Son, Jesus.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
