A Prayer for Encouragement in the Waiting Season

My morning devotion began with one of my favorite verses, and immediate tears sprang to my eyes. Immeasurably more God, really? I’m not so much feeling the “more.” Which I hadn’t. I’d been waiting and waiting for answers to specific prayers and all it seemed was coming at me was less and less—definitely not more. And I was wearing thin. I wondered, How much longer could I wait patiently and hopefully? But as the tears streamed, a shift of spirit suddenly struck. God spoke directly to my soul… Oh dear child, your eyes are on the wrong things. Look how much more I have given that you are just not seeing. And like a breakthrough of light that had been shadowed by my focus on the comforts of the world, my eyes were opened. I had been waiting for pain relief, financial relief, and varying stress relief, among other things, yet had lost focus on some of the greater gifts I’d been given, like blessings of love and community within my marriage, family, friendships, and a church we love.
You may not necessarily have a great marriage (or be married at all), a strong family, solid friends, or a church that you feel at home in—or maybe you can relate to one or a few of those. But the truth is, God has blessed us all in unique and specific ways. And just maybe while you’re waiting for that something to change, waiting for that answer to prayer, God wants you to open your eyes to the more he has already given you too. The Lord blesses us all differently, but he certainly blesses us all. Without fail, without end.
And even if your visible world falls short of your expectations or looks incredibly less than those around you, our great God graciously gives each of us an abundance of gifts. He offers an explosion of treasures and blessings for our sight and soul through his creation. He extends multitudes more mercy and grace than we can grasp or deserve. He releases relentlessly more peace and joy in his presence than we can perceive. And he offers a lavish love like no other. All of this and so much more. More than we can sense or see.
But I believe as we gaze more and more at the gifts and blessings he has given, we can find the will to wait more patiently and more hopefully. Because in this focus we are reminded that God has worked for our good over and over, we are reassured that he is still working on our behalf, and we gain confidence that he will continue to bless us again and again. As we wait today, let’s glorify the good Lord for the immeasurably more he has given, praise him for the immeasurably more he is working on, and thank him for the immeasurably more he will keep giving because he will never stop pouring out on you whom he loves. I pray that right now, while you continue to wait, you will find encouragement in his present abounding love, his generous goodness, and his forever faithfulness.
Let’s Pray:
Lord God, You offer so many blessings. More than I can count or see. Sometimes, while I’m waiting for a change or answer to a prayer I feel desperate for, I become discouraged and disheartened as my focus drifts to what I don’t have. But help me open my eyes to all that you have already given and all that you have already offered. I want to set my stare on your unfailing, unrelenting mercy, grace, peace, compassion, and care. Please help me be encouraged today that your good gifts have never stopped and will never stop blessing my life. Lord, Your generosity is greater than I can measure, and I am so thankful. In Your Son’s Perfect Name, Amen.
