A Post Can Destroy Your Witness

“Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.” James 1:26
During WWII the phrase, “Loose lips, Sink ships” was coined to prevent serviceman from sharing sensitive military information.
Today we’re more connected to the world than ever, yet over 60 years ago the government felt the need to launch an entire marketing campaign on the wartime phrase. Posters were plastered everywhere servicemen frequented to remind them to guard conversations so the enemy couldn’t gain and use secure information.
The passage today’s verse comes from discusses careless talk when it tells us to keep a tight rein on our tongues. Our words are an extension of our thoughts.
In The 180 Program, a life recovery curriculum taught in some of society’s darkest places, says our thoughts become words and our words actions. This occurs every second of every day. These actions cause events. Our “loose lips” can create situations that could hinder someone’s relationship with Christ.
Those thoughts which turn into words often came first from things we watched, heard, or did. If James was writing that Scripture today, with our current technology, it could easily read, “Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their social media sites deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.”
In our desire to make our voice heard, with 240 characters or less and a click of a button, we can destroy our witness.
