When God Looks Down from Heaven
By Tiffany Thibault

God looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. - Psalm 53:2

When you are flying high up in the sky and look out the window to the earth below, this is what you can see: the rivers look like sparkling ribbons, curving and twisting down the back of a girl's long hair. The tiny houses and yards look like homes where Tinkerbell could live. The farm fields are filled with crops varying in their colors, like patchwork on a beautiful quilt. The tiny boats are bobbing on the water, clearly pointing out the massiveness of our oceans.

This is why I love to have the window seat when I am flying on a plane. I love to look at my hometown as we take off and the new city as we land. Everything looks different when seen from above. I see things as I look down that are not so clear when I am on the ground looking around me. Buildings look shorter, homes seem smaller, rivers seem longer, deserts seem more desolate, and mountains are not so grand.

When I am high up in the sky, I am in awe of all that I see, of all the things God created and that man has built. My struggles fade into the background when I look upon the unending expanse of the sky.

When I fly, I know I am at the mercy of this plane made of metal and bolts. I am humbled by my absolute lack of being able to control any single part of the process, while at the same time, I am absolutely amazed at the ability to travel such distances in such a short time.

Our verse says this: “God looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.”

Psalm 53:2, inspirational image

When He looks down from heaven, God, the maker of the entire universe, sees you. When we look down from a plane, we see people moving around like little tiny specks. We cannot distinguish their eye color, their height, or their beliefs from such a high distance. God though, He can see the color of your eyes. He knows you so intimately that He even knows the number of hairs on your head (Luke 12:7).

Not only does God know the details about how we look, but He also watches as we come and go. Psalm 121:7-8 says this - the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Though there are billions of people in this world, but the Lord truly cares about each one.

Our verse says that He is looking to see if there is anyone who understands God and seeks Him. God loves you and longs to have a personal relationship with you. He may allow things to come your way to get your attention, so that you seek Him in prayer and study His word. His only desire is that we seek His face, that we seek to know Him more and more.

Today as the Lord looks down on you, can you spend as much time studying Him through His word as you doing preparing yourself for your day? Can you spend as much time talking to Him (praying) as you do scrolling on social media?

As the sun sets on yet another day, can you have confidence that your time was spent wisely, that you have spent time seeking the Lord today for wisdom, peace, and understanding?

The Creator of the universe longs to have a relationship with us. Just as a pilot knows where and how to fly a plane to get us to our destination, let's be intentional about getting to know God deeper, more and more each day. We don't know how many days we each have left to live, so let’s be purposeful about living today, loving Jesus and growing closer to Him. You won’t regret it!
