How Your Marriage Can Glorify God
By: Amanda Idleman
"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31
Marriage is more than just two people fated to fall in love and bring each other joy. Biblical marriage is a covenant relationship between a man, a woman, and the Lord. This union is sacred, and its purpose goes far beyond our enjoyment. We are called to build each other up in Christ. Our lives together are to be lived for the glory of God.
This should inspire excitement and comfort when the joy of marriage feels hard to hold onto. We can weather storms together because it’s not just about us, and it’s not just up to us to make this thing work. God is at the center of what defines a biblical marriage. We can go to him when we need grace, forgiveness, joy, or peace. He is the glue that holds this union together.
God also gives our lives together purpose. We are living out a shared story that isn’t just aimed at a cushy retirement. We are telling a story that points to God and his goodness at every possible juncture.
Our marriages are defined by how God has provided for us, how he led us toward the next right step together, and how he used our gifts and talents to bless our neighbors, how he’s called and equipped us to raise children who will love the Lord with all their hearts, minds, souls, and strength, how he showed up with his miracle-working power when we needed it. He called us to give of ourselves in ways we never imagined possible. He gave us the strength to forgive, even when we felt we were at the end of our rope with each other.
It’s all for His glory! And when we share the story of our lives with others, the first and most glaring detail that should stand out is how you together faithfully and wholeheartedly served the Lord. That is what the good and faithful married servant story should look like. This union is so much more about God’s call to love, give, serve, submit, repent, show grace, and so much more than it’s about a romantic fairy tale.
The good news is that if you live a life for Christ together, you also get that fairytale love because his goodness empowers us to be the spouses we need to be for each other.
Let’s Pray:
God, Show us how to live for your glory. Let our marriages be less about meeting our needs and more about living a shared story for your glory. Please show us your ways and teach us your paths. Grow in us a strong character that points others to your goodness. Inspire us to live with your purpose. Keep us humble so we can follow your path. Help us love each other well all along the way. Amen.
