The Good Fight

2 Timothy 4:6-7

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

This is one of the most remarkable, triumphant statements in all of Scripture. Paul is in a Roman prison, and he knows that he probably will be executed. Note that he does not say, “I have preached sermons, and I have volunteered appropriately.” He says, “I have fought the fight of faith.” We don’t always think of our spiritual lives in terms of a fight. But if you have been a Jesus-follower for any length of time, you’ll agree that you’re engaged in a constant struggle to let the purposes of God emerge within you. There’s no shame in that, so don’t be discouraged or embarrassed by it. Be excited when the Spirit of God illuminates an aspect of your life and begins to invite you to change. Celebrate the gift of His involvement in your life. Say, “God, thank You for the privilege of repenting. Thank You that You love me enough to say, ‘Don’t go that way.’” If there’s a spiritual struggle in your life, it’s because God is refining you and bringing something good to you.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You that You care enough about me to refine and shape me for Your purposes. I pray that at the end of my days in the earth I will be able to say, like Paul, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” In Jesus’ name, amen.
