TELL YOUR STORY
“Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
One of the fears I bump into when I talk to people about telling their Jesus-story is, “What if somebody asks me a question—a really hard one with no easy answer? What am I going to say?” I’ll tell you exactly what to say: “I don’t know.” I’m not trying to be coy—I’m trying to lift this burden from you. There is a God, and we are not Him. Isn’t that good to know? I began breathing so much easier when I finally understood that I didn’t have to know all the answers. Here’s what you can say: “I can tell you about my journey. I can tell you about the rough patches in my life. I can tell you about the times God has lifted me up and dusted me off and restored me. I can tell you about His grace and His mercy. I’m sure you can ask a question I don’t know the answer to. But we can search the Word of God together. I’ll bet we can find some insight there.” I’ve discovered that in places of suffering and searching, people don’t need great answers. They need someone who is simply willing to sit with them as they are trying to sort out life and make their way to God. And your gentle insistence that Jesus makes the difference will change everything.
Heavenly Father, thank You for my story. Thank You for the things You’ve done in my life. You have lifted me up and dusted me off and restored me. Thank You for Your grace and mercy that sees me through every day and for Your provision for my every need. Give me the courage to tell my story. In Jesus’ name, amen.
