1 Corinthians 6:20 (NIV®)
You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
The redemptive work of Jesus on the cross was intended to transform us body, soul, and spirit. Honoring God, then, is also an expression of our total person: body, soul, and spirit. So often I think we have tried to reduce the redemptive work of Jesus to something that has benefits just in eternity. “My sins are forgiven, so my ticket is punched and I get into heaven when I’m done here under the sun.” That’s not what Scripture teaches us. The redemptive work of Jesus was for our whole person, and it was for our lives under the sun as well as our lives in eternity. We will have glorious, perfect bodies in eternity, but we should treat our current ones, as imperfect as they are, as precious gifts that Jesus bought at a price. That means giving attention not only to food and exercise but things like sleep, and stress, and what we put before our eyes and into our ears.
Heavenly Father, sometimes life in the earth seems limited and bound by the chains of a human body. You have said that I am created in Your image, and everything about me is Yours. Show me how to honor You with my physical self, that my days here would be fruitful for You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
