Humility and a Promise

James 4:6 (NIV®)

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Humble is a fuzzy word, and I’m not sure we know what to do with it. I don’t believe being humble means degrading or demeaning yourself. It’s not a denial of the strengths and abilities and opportunities that God has given you. I think being humble is recognizing both what God created you to be and the reality of what you are not. But humility comes with a promise. Imagine that people are lining up in two lines. Get in one line and you know God will oppose you. Get in the other line and you know God will give you grace. Which line do you want to get in?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for the clear direction You give me in James 4:6. I acknowledge that You are holy and perfect in Your every thought and deed. Help me to always keep Your holiness and perfection in mind and to judge myself by it. Thank You that You help me as I run life’s race and love me in spite of my failures. In Jesus’ name, amen.
