A Yielded Sacrifice
Romans 12:1 (NIV®)
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.
The Jewish sacrificial system of this time was at the center of serving God. In the Jerusalem temple there was an enormous altar where the priest would lay the daily sacrifices, creating a constant aroma of burning flesh. It would have dominated the atmosphere. Before those animals were placed on the altar, they were slaughtered. Paul is using that imagery, but he says, “I want you to offer yourself as a living sacrifice. Present yourself to God and say, ‘God, I’m here to serve.’” The grandest way to live is to be yielded to the authority of God, but it’s a paradox—how can I gain freedom and liberty by willingly yielding mine to the authority of an Almighty God? Present yourself to God as a living sacrifice. That takes faith. That is your spiritual act of worship.
Heavenly Father, I present myself to You again today as a living sacrifice. Thank You that because of Jesus’ shed blood on the cross, my sacrifice is worthy. Show me each day how I should offer myself to You, because Your ways are not my ways and my vision is limited by my humanity. Thank You for Your mercy. In Jesus’ name, amen.
