Time with God - October 5

Jesus' final act on the cross was a profound display of love and devotion, as he entrusted his mother to the care of his beloved disciple John, demonstrating the importance of family and compassion in our lives. This poignant passage from the Bible invites us to reflect on our own relationships with our mothers and consider how we can show them the same kind of care and support that Jesus showed his mother.

John 19:25-27

“But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

If you want to be like Jesus, take care of your mother!

Jesus was in enormous physical pain. He was fighting for every breath. As he struggled to breathe, his raw back was rubbing up and down on the rough-hewn wood of the cross. Somehow in all of that, he recognized his mother standing below him in the crowd, and his dear friend and disciple John standing near her. He thought of what her life would be like now and how much she would need to be cared for and supported. So he asked John to care for her as if she were his own mother. And that is just what John did from that time on.

As you think of your mother’s situation, is God challenging you to take action to make sure she is taken care of in some way? Remember all that she has given of herself for you. Or do you know of another’s mother who needs some loving care?
