Week 48

Sin

If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it. Genesis 4:7

Sin.
Now, there’s a word we don’t hear much anymore. It became passé when doing things God’s way became uncool—which was right around the time we started thinking we know better than He does. There was a time when it was a part of our culture to acknowledge faith publicly, pray, go to church, read the Bible as a family—and repent when we sinned.

Yes, “sinned.”

It’s common now to blame evil on everything but our selfish, free-will choices. Instead, we make excuses: it’s due to addiction or drama from the past or some sort of instability. While these things definitely exist, some- times sinning is just choosing to do things our own way. You want to get right with God? Then do things His way.

Sin exists, and God’s justice demands a penalty for sin. That penalty, ultimately, is death. If that were the end of the story, it would be a sad story indeed. But the second part of our verse today brings good news! We don’t have to succumb to sin or pay its price. Jesus already paid it. He offers eternal life to all who accept His free gift of forgiveness and salvation.

Sweet Freedom in Action

Today, you’ll have the opportunity to acknowledge that thing you do is not a “habit” or a “personality quirk” but sin. We’re given strength enough to stop it when we accept God’s free gift.

offerIn Sweet Freedom, Sarah Palin invites you to draw strength and inspiration from 260 meditations based on guiding Biblical verses. You are not alone in your doubts and anxieties—we all bear the burdens of everyday stresses, and for most of us, our concerns spread beyond our selves to our families, communities, and country. But Palin shows that with abiding faith, and by opening ourselves to the truths that have saved mankind for generations, we can thrive—and experience true freedom.
