Moments with You Couples Devotional 12/7

Words to Live By

Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You. PSALM 119:11

At first, this may seem like just another story about the power of temptation, especially sexual temptation. In reality, however, it's a story about the power of God . . . especially the power of His Word.

Chuck Swindoll, the well-known pastor and Bible teacher, recalls a lonely night he spent in Canada years ago. He had been gone from home for more than a week, and his weariness was mounting. After finishing dinner alone, he went to the elevator to go to his room, and two young women got on with him. He pushed the sixth-floor button and then asked, "What floor for you, ladies?" They slyly answered, "Six is as good as any for us. Have any plans for tonight?"

Talking about this later, Chuck described what he felt at the moment: "We were all alone in an elevator. In Canada. I was flattered, to be honest, since most folks don't usually mistake me for Robert Redford. These women were available and I was lonely. I had a significant decision to make. The bait had been dropped."

But in those heart-pounding seconds as the elevator made its ascent, Chuck was surprised at the first things to flash through his mind. His wife and four children? His reputation? His risk of being seen? No, not at first.

His first thoughts were the words of Galatians 6:7: "Whatever a man sows, this he will also reap." And Ephesians 6:11: "Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil." And Romans 6:11: "Consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus."

As Chuck recalled, "The memorized Word of God flew to my rescue, right on time."

You never know when temptation will strike. But when you know the Word of God, you don't really have to.

Talk about the place of the Scriptures in your daily life. How could it be a bigger part? What's one verse you could memorize right now?

Pray for one another to stand firm against the lures of the world, the flesh and the devil.
