Apollyon
By David Chadwick

Every leader knows this truth: To win a battle, you must know your enemy.

Coaches spend long hours studying game film, carefully noting the opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. Generals do the same in war.

As a follower of Jesus, you also need to know your enemy. You are in a spiritual war.

Much can be learned about your adversary by looking at his names. He is the devil – which means “the divider.” He strategizes how to divide people. He is the evil one. All evil is rooted in him. If you ever come close to evil, you should flee. It’s not of God.

The devil is also called Apollyon (Revelation 9:11). It means “the destroyer.” That’s part of the evil one’s job description. His goal is to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10).

Whenever you see destruction, it is not of God. It’s an earmark of the devil’s work. His signature is all over it.

Jesus’s job description is also enveloped in John 10:10. Whereas the devil came to kill, steal, and destroy, Jesus came to give you abundant life.

Wherever Jesus went, he gave life to people. Sick people were healed. The lame walked. The deaf heard. The demonically possessed were delivered. The hungry were fed.

Jesus’s followers are called to follow him and do what we can do to bring life to people.

One of the best ways to defeat the devil’s wiles is to give life to others. That’s the opposite of destruction. And when you give life to a person, you are defeating the enemy.

Today, let Jesus’s job description be yours. Follow him throughout your day.

Find a hurt and heal it. Find a need and fill it. Give life to whomever you encounter.

Apollyon is then defeated.

The destroyer is destroyed.

And Jesus’s Kingdom of life is advanced.
