The Cure to Today’s Despair

Read Genesis 11:1-9.
Even after God rescued Noah and his family from the flood, a man built a city in defiance of the Lord. In Babel, the people attempted to build “a tower that reaches to the heavens” (Genesis 11:4). They wanted to make a name for themselves, to push God out of the way and stand in His place—to steal His glory.
This is exactly what we have done in the West. Instead of bowing to God in gratitude for the Biblical values of our Western civilization, we bow down to political correctness. We bow to materialism, to our own intellect, and to moral relativism. And the more we depart as a nation from the one true God and our Biblical roots, the deeper we plunge into confusion, fear, anxiety, and loneliness. But no matter how dark the times may get, our God is faithful. His purposes will not be thwarted, which is why God did not leave humanity without a light—someone to testify to the Truth of His goodness. Many years after the incident of the Tower of Babel, God raised up a man named Abraham.
While the City of Man was full of arrogance, pride, and self-worship, Abraham’s heart was set on a city designed, founded, and built by God Himself (see Hebrews 11:10). He longed for the presence of God and the complete fulfillment of His promises. Although Abraham faced temptations and faltered at times, he knew what God would do at the end of time—his eyes were set on the City of God. Abraham’s faith did more than fill him with hope. It changed the world.
The darkness that we’re seeing today, the dreadful things happening in the West—how our culture has been hijacked—these are indisputable tragedies. But God promised Abraham that through him all nations would be blessed (see Genesis 12:3). And indeed, from his line, the world received Jesus Christ, the Son of God, Savior of sinners. By His blood, we have a home in the City of God. So let’s heed Paul’s instruction and Abraham’s example, setting our minds “on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2).
Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness. Empower me to keep my eyes set on Your heavenly city, joyfully anticipating the day when You will make all things new. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:1-2).
