Following His Lead

You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16:11 NKJV)

The Bible tells the story of Gideon, who was called by God to lead the children of Israel into battle. But Gideon was afraid. He wasn’t sure if that was God’s will, even though an angel had spoken to him. So Gideon asked for a confirmation. He basically said, “If this is really you, Lord, then tomorrow morning when the dew is normally on the ground, I pray that it will be on this fleece. If the fleece is wet and the ground is dry, I’ll know it is Your will.”

The next morning, just as Gideon had asked, the fleece was wet and the ground was dry. If you’ve heard the expression “laying a fleece before the Lord,” this is where it came from.

One way God speaks to us through circumstances. When I sense God is leading me, I believe He will confirm it circumstantially. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians, “When I came to the city of Troas to preach the Good News of Christ, the Lord opened a door of opportunity for me” (2:12 NLT). The idea is that circumstances will line up.

Another way God speaks to us is through His peace. Colossians 3:15 says, “And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts” (NLT). The term “rule” carries the meaning of an umpire who is making decisions on the field. In other words, God’s peace can be the umpire in our hearts.

When we’re seeking God’s will, we want to first be sure it is God’s Word that we’re basing our decisions on. Then we pray for the Lord to open a door, which is circumstantial confirmation. And then we ask for His peace. If we can get all these lined up, we are on the right path toward knowing God’s will.
