The Life You Deserve

Read Psalm 103:8-12 (ESV)

The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

Reflect

Because of our sins, what did we deserve from God? What does God offer us instead?

When is the last time you praised God for who He is and what He has done for you? It’s easier to think about everything in life that doesn’t meet our expectations. What’s lacking? What’s frustrating? What’s disappointing? What’s heartbreaking or even tragic?

But when we focus on these things, we forget that even if our lives don’t meet up to our expectations, we have already been blessed by God beyond what we deserve.

The world loves to remind us of everything that we “deserve.” “You deserve to be happy,” “You deserve to have it all” etc. But the Bible reminds us what we really deserve. Romans 3:23 says that all have sinned and fall short of God’s standard of holiness. Because of that sin, we all deserve death. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

That is why David praised God for His mercy, grace, patience, and faithful love in today’s Psalm. He acknowledges that God does not give us what we deserve (judgment) but instead offers forgiveness. Like David, I am grateful that God does not deal with me according to my sins but instead has removed my transgressions from me.

But God hasn’t just been merciful to me by forgiving my sins and offering a way for me to be saved. If that was all He had done for me, it would be more than enough. But He has gone above and beyond in blessing me in this life as well. And because of His graciousness, I know that I have incredible blessings waiting for me in eternity.

Friends, I encourage you to spend some time counting your blessings today. Reflect on all the ways that God has been merciful and gracious to you. Then, spend some time in prayer thanking and praising Him for not dealing with you according to your sins but for blessing you beyond what you deserve instead.

Pray

God, You have been so good to me. You haven’t given me the punishment I deserve but have instead filled my life with blessings that I don’t deserve. You have blessed me beyond all that I could ask or imagine. Thank You, Lord. Amen.
