Clothed in Confidence, Not Comparison - Encouragement for Today - October 9, 2025

That girl you’re comparing yourself to? She’s struggling too. And God never asked you to compete in the first place.

Clothed in Confidence, Not Comparison

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” Proverbs 31:25 (NIV)

I was 17, scrolling through social media, looking for the girl my first boyfriend left me for. I found myself hoping she wasn’t that pretty. Hoping I could feel better by picking her apart. When we are insecure, we often become unkind.

Then I saw her profile picture. And she was beautiful. I looked in the mirror and thought, Of course he left me … She’s prettier, more talented, cooler. No wonder.

I’ve grown a lot since then. I’ve learned that God didn’t create me — or you — just to be pretty. He created us for a purpose. I’ve learned that comparison is a trap and that our worth isn’t based on what we see in the mirror or on someone else’s highlight reel.

But just last week, as a grown woman who loves Jesus and tries to follow Him daily, I caught myself comparing my life to a close friend’s. She seemed ahead of me — more successful and put together. I felt behind and overlooked.

Eventually, I got brave and told her how I felt. I expected judgment, but instead, she laughed knowingly. “Wait … you compare yourself to me? I’ve been struggling with comparison too.”

That honest conversation reminded me of three important truths:

  1. Confession brings confidence. When we confess our insecurities to trusted friends — and especially to God — we’re not inviting shame. We’re inviting the Holy Spirit and godly community to speak truth over us. Confession reminds us of our weakness and God’s strength.
  1. There will always be someone “more.” More liked. More organized. More successful. More fill-in-the-blank. But God didn’t create you to be her. He created you to be you.
  1. Comparison will steal the relationships God wants to use to bless you. If you’re busy competing with people who were meant to be your teammates, you’ll miss the beauty of what God wants to do through them and you.

At the end of the day, the most beautiful thing about you will never be your hair, highlight reel, or résumé. It’s Jesus in you.

Proverbs 31:25 says the woman of God “is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” Where does her confidence come from? Not trends or titles but truth. Her identity is grounded in who she belongs to. Clothed in God's strength, she looks ahead and laughs instead of getting lost in self-doubt.

Today, in a world constantly telling us we’re not enough, let’s remember:

We were created with purpose.
We are covered in grace.
We can walk in confidence because Jesus is with us today, and He’s already holding tomorrow.

Lord, when I feel overwhelmed, remind me of Your power. I trust You to do immeasurably more than I can see or dream. Give me peace, strength, and perspective today. When my mind races toward the worst-case scenario, remind me You're leading me to Your best. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

FOR DEEPER STUDY

Proverbs 31:30-31, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate” (NIV).

In what areas of your life are you most tempted to compare yourself to others? What would it look like for you to clothe yourself in God’s strength and dignity this week?

Who have you been competing with, even unintentionally, who you could start cheering on instead? We'd love to hear from you in the comments!
