How to Serve a King - Encouragement Café - April 30

How to Serve a King
By Linda Gray

And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. Luke 2:7 ESV

Mary didn’t know much about birthing babies and neither did Joseph.  And yet they delivered the King of Kings alone and without any assistance. No midwives were present and the surroundings were the crudest where delivering a baby was concerned.

Did they ever wonder, “How can we raise the ‘King of Kings’? Why has God entrusted His care to us? We are lowly citizens of Nazareth. He deserves so much more.  What can we offer Him?”

They did what other parents would do. She nursed Him. Changed His diapers. Encouraged Him to smile as she tickled His little belly. Rocked Him and watched His eyelids flutter close in sleep. Comforted Him as He cried out in pain as His first tooth pushed its way through His pink gums. She knew He was the Son of God.  But He was also her little boy.

He carried Him proudly. Watched Him toddle as He learned to walk. Maybe he placed a heavy hammer into His chubby little hands as he taught him how to drive a nail. He was the Son of God. But He was also his little boy.

They may have never seen those acts as worship.  But they were.  We do things every day that may seem so ordinary to us. And yet they are acts of worship if we do those things in the name of the Lord.

Did you smile and offer a kind word to the cashier that seemed a little flustered? Did you pray with your child before they headed out the door? Did you volunteer in your church nursery so a visiting couple could sit in the worship service without distraction? Did you text a scripture to a friend who was struggling? The list could go on and on.

These simple acts are indeed service to the Lord.  One doesn’t need to be a Bible Teacher, Preacher, or well-known Christian singer/musician to serve the King.  We just need to be aware of those around us who need a touch from God. He is looking for vessels who are willing to be used.

Father, it is my desire to serve You with all my heart. Help me to do acts of worship every day that will bring honor to You.  Amen
