Letting Go

There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV

A Bluebird family had taken up residence in the little house outside my backdoor. I watched as mother and father bird diligently attended to the four tiny helpless little ones inside. Busily, both parents flew in and out bringing food for the brand new hatchlings.

As I watched, I thought about a season of life being played out like a drama unfolding before my eyes. Weeks earlier the house had been empty. One day I noticed some activity and looked inside to find a carefully constructed nest.

Sometime later a peek inside revealed four smooth, glossy, sky blue eggs. Once the babies were here, activity was constant as the parents’ energy and focus was on raising those young ones.

Isn’t that a beautiful picture of us humans? We leave home, marry, set up house, raise children, and in a blink they are grown and leaving the “nest”.

Oftentimes the transition as children leave home can create stress and anxiety. Roles must be redefined. Parents worry about “letting go” and often hold too tightly creating conflict and fractured relationships.

Just as seasons change, so do our lives. We have a choice as we face change. Do we resist and try to “hold on to” the past, or do we “let go” and soar into the future embracing our changing roles.

God has made it clear in His Word that He does not change. Hebrews 13:8 says,

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today and forever. NIV

He created the order of life. Raising our children is a God given responsibility and joy, but we do not remain in that role forever. Life changes with its seasons.

God is the anchor as we move forward once our nest is empty. We know we can trust our future to Him. He never changes and knows the struggle in our hearts as we release our children.

As our children grow into adulthood and begin to establish separate lives, there is more time available for our own pursuits. We can spend time seeking God in His Word, asking Him for guidance, as we move into this uncharted territory.

Be still and know Him. Journaling insights, thoughts, and ideas is very helpful. We can pray for our children who, by the way, will be watching.

Will we let them go and embrace our own lives, or will we seek to find identity in them thereby creating stumbling blocks for all?

Father, You know our hearts and struggles. You know our hopes, dreams, and talents. You never leave nor forsake us. Your ear is tuned into Your children. Help us Father as we face transitions and change. In each season of our journey here on this earth, let us continually seek to live full lives that honor You.
