The Faith of Sarah
By Carolyn Dale Newell

By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.  Hebrews 11:11 NKJV

God promised Abraham and Sarah a son.  He promised to give them descendants as numerous as the stars.  This seemed physically impossible since Sarah was past the age of child bearing.  Abraham was one hundred years old and Sarah was ninety.  They trusted in God’s faithfulness.

Yes, their faith may have waivered when they took matters into their own hands with Hagar. Sarah thought her maid, Hagar, could give Abraham the promised Child, but that was not God’s plan.

Paul thought that their faith was so strong that he wrote of their hope when they had no earthly reason to hope: “who contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations…” (Rom. 4:18).

Abraham and Sarah had hope and they believed the unbelievable because they trusted God.

Many of us can identify with Sarah. We don’t see God working in something, and we think we need to jump in and do it ourselves. However, Sarah’s story is in Scripture as an example to us, and we need to remind ourselves to be patient and wait on God.

We should be encouraged that even though Sarah’s faith was not always consistent, she was still included among the heroes of faith in Hebrews chapter 11.

The most important thing we can take away from her story is to have a faith that hopes in God when things seem hopeless.  We need a faith that believes the promises that God has given us.

He has promised to supply all our needs, give us a peace to guard our hearts and minds and to strengthen us, just to name a few. Ask God to strengthen your hope and faith today.

It is almost impossible to have perfect faith, especially when the situation looks hopeless. However, when our faith is weak, remember Sarah. First, remember to be patient and allow God to have His perfect timing.

Next, don’t beat yourself up because your faith becomes weak. Sarah’s faith became weak also, and she is among the faithful of Hebrews 11.

Dear Lord, You are such a merciful Father to us. We know our faith fails at times. Please increase our faith! Help us to have the hope that Abraham and Sarah had in a hopeless situation. Thank You Jesus! Amen!
