“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” –2 Corinthians 9:6,11
Five years ago, Austrian millionaire Karl Rabeder claimed he would give away his $4.7-million fortune to charity. He said, "My idea is to have nothing left. Absolutely nothing. Money is counter-productive—it prevents happiness to come."
While it remains to be seen whether or not Mr. Rabeder will follow through, he is correct in believing that giving breaks the back of materialism. God wants you to own your stuff and not have your stuff own you. Giving, and giving generously, helps us live free from the bondage that materialism can bring us.
With Christmas just around the corner, it’s important to remember why you celebrate this time of year. God set the ultimate example by giving you His one and only Son. In the hustle and bustle of shopping, decorating, and celebrating, remember that it was all made possible because God gave. In return, have you given Him your all?
“God, you have never held back from me. You gave me your one and only Son. Give me your heart. Help me to display your character and always look for ways to give to your Church and to others. Let your example help me to live a life free of materialism, full of freedom.”
Where your heart is, there your treasure is also. It's impossible to out-give God. Make sure your life reflects God’s character of giving today. Live a life of generosity today and everyday going forward. Find ways today to live this out.
