Rock Solid Reminders [Part 2]
Are you ready for some Good News?
When you establish reminders of God’s grace in your life, your faith holds strong in times of trouble.
Today’s Text: “And Joshua said to them, “Pass on before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’” - (Joshua 4:5–6, ESV)
After the Hebrew people passed through the Red Sea, they went three days without water and they “grumbled against Moses” (Exo. 15:24).
Three days?! That’s all? Really?
God had opened up a sea, escorted the Israelites to safe ground and swallowed up Pharaoh’s army and the Hebrew people were grumbling after three days. How quickly can people forget the grandeur of God’s grace?
But the passing through the Jordan was different. The people of God walked through the parted Jordan waters and marched on to conquer Canaan with confidence. What was the difference?
When the people passed through the Red Sea, they danced on the other side, but established no reminder of the miracle. But when the people moved miraculously through the Jordan they took twelve stones from the midst of the Jordan and set up a memorial on the other side. It was the Lord’s plan, a gift for a forgetful people.
The twelve big stones stood on the other side of the Jordan as rock solid reminders of the grace of God.
If the Jordan miracle had been set in the modern world, perhaps God would have said, “Take 12 digital photos and rotate them as your screen saver on your desktop and the wallpaper on your device.” It doesn’t have to be rocks, anything handy will do. But, when God moves in your life, establish some reminders – like God mementos of the moments – that will keep your heart and mind ever mindful of the goodness of God in your life.
We’re not unlike the forgetful Hebrew people. The searing heat of desert times wars against our gratitude and faith. But when you establish rock solid reminders of God’s faithfulness, your trust remains true. And that’s the Gospel!
