Lifting the Veil Off the Mind [Part 2]

Are you ready for some good news?

As Jesus’ own flesh was torn, so was the veil that separated people from God.

Today’s Text: “Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh….” (Hebrews 10:19–20, ESV)

The holy of holies, which housed the Ark of the Covenant, was the holiest place on earth to the Hebrew people. It was there, behind a thick veil, that God’s presence was manifest, resting upon the Mercy Seat – the gilded cover to the Ark. Of course, God is omnipresent and always has been. The scripture doesn’t teach that God’s presence was limited to the Holy of Holies, but that the sheer intensity of his manifest presence was centralized upon the symbol of the Ark of the Covenant.

Adjacent to the Holy of Holies in the temple was “the Holy Place”. The veil separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies.

The priests carried out their duties in the “Holy Place” but only the High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies (and only on one day of the year – The Day of Atonement).

The veil didn’t just separate the place of God’s dwelling from the place of humanity’s service, it also connected them. In other words, one side of the veil was “in” the Holy of Holies and one side of the veil was “in” the Holy Place.

As Jesus was both God and man, the veil touched both divinity and humanity. But, when Jesus’ flesh was torn, the veil was rent asunder and the curtain that closed humanity from the presence of God was laid wide open. Jesus’ own flesh was like a veil connecting God and man. When He was crucified, He opened a new and living way. In other words, Jesus is the Way. And that’s the Gospel!
