Read: Jonah 1

Key Verse: “But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.” Jonah 1:3

Jonah did not want God to lead him. The assignment that God was giving Jonah (to preach in Nineveh) was not appealing to him. In fact, Jonah ran in the other direction, boarding a ship that could have been called Disobedience. Have you ever tried to sneak away from God and hide?  How did that work for you? The temptation to call your own shots and be in charge of your life is real every day. Jonah’s pride told him that he could do better than God’s plan.

This chapter documents what happens after rebellion. First, Jonah went down to Joppa, compromising his convictions, standards, and calling. Second, Jonah had a price to pay as he purchased a ticket.  Sin always takes away from your life. Third, he faced unnecessary storms and pain. Fourth, he ended up in a place he never wanted to be. Stop the downward spiral early and confess your sins quickly. Return to the Lord and He will run toward you faster than you can run away. Pray for someone today who has been running away from God.
