Read: Ephesians 4
The health of any church revolves around this verse. Yes, the staff of a church provides leadership and uses their gifts. Beyond that, a staff also has the role of setting people up for success in ministry. Training, opportunities, encouragement, and prayers are all included in preparing people for works of service. Sadly, 20% of the people end up doing 80% of the work in many churches. I am so grateful that the churches where I have served have been different. It is a joy for me as a pastor to see God’s people playing a vital role in building up the kingdom!
It is more fulfilling for people to participate than to simply be spectators. Church is about being a family, not an entertainment production. In a true family, everyone is important, included, contributing, and looking out for the best of the whole. A worship leader at another church whom I respect spends the bulk of his time training musicians and other worship leaders. This model of humility and productivity has been a great example for many years. He has truly made everyone better by using his time as God desires: developing people! The body of Christ experiences unity and maturity when God’s people find their roles!
