Read: Proverbs 20

Key Verse: “Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.” - Proverbs 20:5

Have you ever seen someone’s life destroyed by drugs and alcohol? It is painful to watch. Many people run to the bottle to try to relieve or numb pain. When I was growing up, there was a bar in our town literally called the “Payne Reliever” on Payne avenue. When you think about drunk drivers, wasted money, hurtful words, absent parents, babies who had contact with alcohol in the womb, terrible decisions, injuries, and fights, the price tag for being led astray by beer is very high.

With God’s help, anyone can live in sobriety. Alcoholics can have a second start through Jesus Christ. There have been several elders in our church who were previously drunkards. The key to breaking free with any sin is to admit the problem, ask God for help daily, get accountability, and give Jesus the steering wheel of your life. He wants to drive you into peace and healing, not just be your spare tire you pull out after an accident. Have the courage to face the pain in your life with God’s people, Word, and Spirit. You will overcome and see clearly the power of the Lord!
